The Dog Days of Summer are here.
The Dog Days are roughly mid-July through mid-August. They coincide with the rising of the star system, Sirius, typically known as the Dog Star. In Hellenistic astrology the Dog Star was associated with summer heat, sudden storms, and lethargy.
Personally, I remember hot summer days growing up in the South. The dogs would find some shade, or the couch, and sleep all day. Though dogs pretty much find great places to sleep anyway, it always took on new meaning for me. In my mind the Dog Days were about celebrating them.
This is a great time to slow down, read a book, watch a movie, take a nap.
These are some of my favorite books for the Dog Days:
The Call of the Wild, by Jack London, the snowy setting helps me forget the heat of summer, made into a movie
The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein, made into a movie
Must Love Dogs by Claire Cook, made into a movie
Dog Stories, by James Herriot, made into a movie called All Creatures Great and Small
Dedicated to all the dogs we have had the privilege of knowing. Especially to Chester. We miss you)
